During the first weeks of August, most public school teachers are catching the last rays of sunshine before heading back to the classroom for another school year. Instead Bill Lombardi is recovering from jet leg after returning from two weeks of work with farmers in the African nation of Malawi through the Farmer-to-Farmer Program sponsored by the United States Agency for International Development. He is also taking part in the county fair of which he is an organizer; he is attending to the daily tasks of being a father to 14 children; and he is seeing to the chores at the school farm while getting ready for a new school year as FFA (Future Farmers of America) instructor at Powell County High School, which is presently in the midst of a major reconstruction project.

Spicing up the arsenal of sentiments and time-honored family recipes demands that modifications be seamless and blend surreptitiously into the highly anticipated and expected elements of the scheme. For this seasonal gathering, SignatureMT’s creative director Jennifer Moore and food extraordinaire, Chandee Bumgardner give the boot to tradition and unleash their creative genius with a brilliant alternative to the usual holiday fare. Antipasto Plate

Arguably the easiest and most popular appetizer around, it’s as simple as choosing a few different cheeses, meats, adding some fruit, nuts, possibly olives, crackers and calling it a day.

• Cheese: Cheese is at its optimal flavor when served at room temperature. When selecting the cheese to serve, a thoughtful mix is important, there should be a variety of texture between soft, firm, and hard. Flavors should be diverse and can be sweet, spicy, or salty.

• Meat: Meat can be as simple as sliced ham or a little more fun like prosciutto and Italian dry salami.

Stepping back in time along the hi-line

They say Havre has it, but what exactly that is, seems open to interpretation. Once upon a time it might have been the resting point on the rail line halfway between Minneapolis and Seattle. Nowadays it might just be a meeting place for local farmers and ranchers. But if people are going to meet, they’re going to want to eat. And no one’s been feeding people along the Hi-Line longer than Andy’s Supper Club.
